CDW Systems spearheads sustainability drive in fenestration industry thanks to merger

Aluminium profiles and frames

With a growing focus on environmental responsibility, the merger between CDW Systems and sister company Clearway Doors & Windows brings both companies green practices together for a more sustainable future.

Sustainability requires a forward-thinking approach to make a proper difference, and the recent merger between specialist aluminium fabricator CDW Systems, based in Gloucester, and sister company, Cheltenham-based supplier and installer Clearway Doors & Windows will allow both companies to streamline their processes even more.

Both companies have made huge strides in the last few years around recycling and manufacturing, and with Clearway Doors & Windows now a division of CDW Systems, that commitment will continue.

Managing Director Jeremy Phillips said: “Homeowners today are increasingly environmentally conscious, and the merger of CDW and Clearway will continue to address this shift.

“All trade supply will now come under CDW while Clearway will continue to be used for supply and installation, and being able to combine our efforts will push our commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices in our operations to reduce our carbon footprint even further.”

A continued commitment to recycling uPVC

Clearway has embraced the FENSA uPVC Windows Recycling Scheme, a program specifically designed for FENSA-approved installers like them. The initiative ensures that old uPVC windows and door frames don’t end up in landfills. The frames are de-glazed ready for collection and Clearway has partnered with local company CNC Recycling, who pick the redundant frames up.

The end-of-life PVC-U windows, door frames and offcuts are re-processed to produce a recycled pellet, from which new PVC-U products are made and may be used as reinforcing for new windows and doors.

“Clearway has been taking a much more sustainable approach for everything to make sure we are a responsible and sustainable window installer and assure homeowners that we are doing everything we can for the planet,” said Jeremy.

Aluminium

CDW Systems’ partnership with Alutrade, the UK’s largest independent aluminium recycling company and extrusion specialist and a leader in sustainable aluminium scrap recycling thanks in no small part to its impressive processing capacity, handling over 30,000 tonnes of metal annually at its Midlands facility.

The collaboration allows CDW Systems to divert its aluminium scrap and offcuts from landfills and ensure they are recycled efficiently within the industry.

“Aluminium is an infinitely recyclable material, and by working with Alutrade we are ensuring that lifecycle is maximised, benefiting both the industry and the environment,” added Jeremy.

“It’s a much more traceable way of dealing with everything we have that can be recycled and allows us to minimise waste generation and conserve valuable resources.”

Beyond recycling: A collaborative push for sustainability

The merger between CDW Systems and Clearway Doors & Windows goes beyond just individual recycling initiatives and will allow the company to work more closely with key suppliers who share its commitment to sustainability.

One such example is CDW Systems’ partnership with Technal, one of its main profile supplier and part of the Hydro Group. CDW Systems orders a significant amount of Technal’s Circal 75R, high-quality aluminium profile that is made with 75% recycled content, significantly reducing the environmental impact of the fabrication process.

“The merger has been an exciting move for our customers and suppliers, but it’s also an exciting move for our sustainability journey,” added Jeremy.

“By combining expertise in fabrication, installation, and a shared passion for environmental responsibility, our forward-thinking approach will help us do everything we can help the glazing industry become more sustainable and contribute to a greener future for all.”
