With more installers turning to aluminium, Jeremy Phillips, Managing Director of leading aluminium fabricator CDW Systems, discusses how fabricators and systems companies must provide the right support to help them make the transition successfully.
The landscape of the window and door industry is changing. As we move towards a more sustainable future, we’re seeing a significant shift away from the industry’s historic reliance on uPVC, with more installers exploring the possibilities that aluminium presents.
It’s easy to see why. Aluminium is perfect for commercial projects but is also proving increasingly popular with homeowners thanks to its versatility and aesthetic appeal. Despite being lightweight and therefore easier to install, it is 3.5 times stronger than uPVC, making it incredibly durable and long-lasting.
From an environmental perspective, aluminium presents a more sustainable alternative. Unlike uPVC, it is fully recyclable, and with thermal efficiency rapidly advancing through innovations like thermal break technology, it’s meeting evolving energy efficiency standards and stringent building regulations.
Its adaptability means it isn’t confined to commercial properties either – aluminium can seamlessly complement various architectural styles, both traditional and modern, making it an attractive option for residential projects too.
However, for installers who have traditionally worked with uPVC, making the switch to aluminium can seem daunting. That’s why it’s crucial for fabricators and systems companies to provide the right support and solutions to help make this transition as smooth as possible.
At CDW Systems, we understand that installers who are used to fitting uPVC products quickly will want to maintain that efficiency with aluminium. That’s why we’re seeing systems companies develop innovative solutions that make installation faster and easier while maintaining the highest quality standards.
A perfect example is the innovative Quik Clip™ clip-in bead from AluK for their BSF70HI bi-fold door system, which streamlines the installation process, saving time and resources for installers, and which we’ve incorporated into our offering. This technology replaces traditional glazing beads with a simple clip-in system, allowing installers to complete projects more efficiently while minimising the risk of fitting errors, ensuring a perfect finish every time.
We will need to continue going down a more uPVC fitting route for installers with aluminium products, and systems companies are looking at that, and that technology will continue to be developed.
But support goes beyond just providing innovative products. We believe in being more than just a fabricator to our customers. With 30 years of experience in aluminium fabrication, we offer comprehensive support to installers who may be new to fitting aluminium windows and doors.
This includes getting more involved in their projects, providing technical guidance on achieving specific requirements, and helping them navigate ever-changing regulations. Whether it’s a small-scale domestic installation or a full commercial contract, we work closely with our customers to ensure they have the right product for their needs and can deliver the most cost-effective solution.
We can even liaise with architects when necessary, providing that extra level of expertise that can be invaluable for installers taking on new types of projects.
The shift towards aluminium in our industry is only going to continue, and as fabricators, we have a responsibility to ensure our customers are well-equipped to meet this growing demand.
By providing the right combination of innovative products and comprehensive support, we can help installers make the transition to aluminium as seamless as possible while maintaining the high standards our industry demands.
