Our very own Liam Smith has raised more than £3,000 for charity after completing the London Marathon.
Liam, who works in order processing, wanted to raise as much money as possible for Leukaemia Care following the loss of his nan from a short battle with the cancer. And thanks to everyone from CDW who supported him, and others from within the industry, he beat his target of £2,500 by raising £3,023 in total.
Liam said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored me. To run in memory of my Nan and raise vital funds to help others in the future is all down to the people that supported me. I really couldn’t have done it without them and it’s massive for Leukaemia Care.”
We’ve been following Liam as he stepped up his training for the marathon and it was the third time he has taken part to raise money for good causes. How did he find it this time?
“The weather wasn’t playing ball – it was raining up to about halfway, once the rain stopped it got quite humid, so it was a case of trying stay cool but also complete the second half,” said Liam.
“My body got me through it, but it was tough – I had some issues with shin splints this time, whereas I’ve never had injuries previously, so that, and diving into training and a marathon having not really done much exercise in the couple of years prior meant it was much tougher than the previous times.”
“When asked if he’ll do it again in the future, he said: “Initially you always say never again, but the feeling you get at the end of the run is second to none, when the realisation hits of what you have achieved. I’m determined to get fitter and continue to do half marathons so watch this space!”
Leukaemia Care sent all participants who ran in aid of the charity a special message afterwards that said ‘Congratulations to all of you for yesterday. You should all be so proud of yourselves, and it was wonderful to meet so many of you on your special day.’
Liam will receive a certificate of fundraising from Leukaemia Care with the team total and how it will help the charity, and CDW Systems Group Chairman Jeremy Phillips commented: “Everyone at CDW would like to congratulate Liam on his tremendous achievement. To raise over £3,000, while raising awareness of the work Leukaemia Care does, is brilliant.”
